Corporate Network Services’ PROSuite Service Helps Track Down Stolen Laptop
One of Corporate Network Services’ clients in Washington, DC reported in July that one of its computer laptops used in the conference room had been stolen during the night, and asked if we would help the police attempt to recover it using our PROSuite managed services solution. Working with the detective in charge, we provided him with the public IP addresses and the Internet Service Provider the computer was now connected to, as captured by our software.With this information, the police were recently able to secure a subpoena from the courts, so they could trace it even further. Unfortunately the IP address traced back to an unsecure wireless network in Washington, DC and not the thief’s direct location. The police didn’t have any other leads.
The Support Centre at Corporate Network Services didn’t want to give up. CNS Consultant Tony Blevins decided to use the FTP feature in our PROSuite software to connect to the laptop to search for further clues in the case. Low and behold, he noticed that new files posted to the hard drive after the laptop had been stolen were photographs that had been posted to MySpace. He promptly emailed that information to the detectives, who then showed the pictures around the neighborhood and the local schools. School employees identified the person in the picture, and the DC police were able to obtain a search warrant for the person’s home, which turned out to be two doors down from the unsecured wireless network address. The laptop was found and recovered! While no arrests have been made yet, the client and the police of course are happy that the case has been solved.
